Thesis title: The character of Armida and the poetics of operatic adaptation
Michael Lee comes from New Zealand, where his first practical experience of music theatre saw him suspended high above the stage of Wellington’s Downstage Theatre in a production of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen. He completed his Master’s degree in English at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand), with a dissertation on the boy theatre companies of Jacobean London. Since moving to Ireland, he has performed as a singer with the choruses of Opera Ireland and Opera Theatre Company, and has also sung with the medieval group Seanma, the choir of Christ Church Cathedral Dublin and New Dublin Voices. As a freelance broadcaster and speaker he has presented feature programmes, opera broadcasts and concerts for RTÉ lyric fm, and has given courses on opera studies for the UCD Adult Education Centre. Michael is the student representative on the SMI Council (2011-2012).
