Entrance Requirements: a good honours degree
Aim: this modular course offers the opportunity to specialise (Renaissance Studies, Eighteenth-Century Studies, Opera Studies, Source Studies) or pursue a degree which combines elements from these various specialisms. Students may also design their own Independent Study in areas (such as Nineteenth or Twentieth-Century Music, also Irish Music) not covered by the specialisms listed above. It is also possible to take a module from the Composition pathway (after consultation with that pathway’s convenor). The emphasis is on training in independent research. The seminar series of the School, and also that of the Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies, offers a stimulating and supportive research environment.
Compulsory Modules: Research Methods (single module); Dissertation or Edition and Commentary (double modules).
Optional Modules: Historical Topics, Topics in Critical Musicology, Manuscript Studies, Arts Administration, Culture and National Identity in the Long Eighteenth Century, Irish Music: History and Criticism; Aesthetics of Opera, Collections Development, Performance, Independent Study; others as available
Assessment: Continual assessment; essays; seminars; dissertation; other as appropriate (eg solo recital; developing a web resource)
