Big Band

The QUB Big Band was founded in 2002, and has become one of the University’s most popular music-making outfits and a regular fixture in Belfast's jazz calendar. The band is trained and conducted by Stephen Barnett, formerly of the Ulster Orchestra, who is an experienced jazz performer on trombone and piano; the band’s concerts in a range of Belfast venues have featured various world-class solo artists from London, including Gordon Campbell and Bruce Adams. The Christmas 2015 Concert featured Belfast saxophone virtuoso Dave Howell as guest soloist.

The emphasis in Big Band is on learning about playing jazz, offering a friendly environment for staff and students that always includes visitors to Queen's from other parts of the world. Please contact Professor Piers Hellawell for information about vacancies; we always need trumpets and trombones! And please look out for information on our next concert; tickets can be reserved on 028 9097 5337.
