Queen's University Brass Band
Principal Cornet

"QUB Brass band is enjoyable and welcoming!
It is also challenging and demanding -
the kind of environment that a brass band should be!

Playing background
I started to get involved in music at primary school when I was 7 years old.  When I was 13, I joined my first brass band, Newtownards Silver Band.  I played 2nd cornet and then quickly progressed to solo cornet.  However the concern of beauty took over and I acquired some braces!  This considerably hindered my playing so I was asked to repiano cornet.  To this day, I am still playing rep!

At the beginning of 2008 I went to Spain with Festival Brass and marched in front of 400,000 people and played on Spanish TV.  In all it was an amazing experience.  Later the same year I went to Germany to march in a Beer Festival with Wessex Military Band which was also very enjoyable!  In September 2008 I began studying at Queen's and joined the Queen's University Brass Band.  I was lucky to obtain the position of principal cornet which has really improved my playing and pushed my abilities as a player.  I began playing with Downshire Brass Band over the summer in 2009 and I have thoroughly enjoyed this experience :)

Playing achievements/awards
I reached grade 5 on cornet but was useless at music theory and so I never went any further!  Every summer over the last 4 years I have participated in the Armagh Summer School at which 8 professional players from 'Fodens Richardson Band' in England help tutor and guide the band and take sectionals.  This is always a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience!  For the last 3 years my family and I (consisting of 5 players) have participated in the street competition in which we have obtained the top prize 3 years running!  Also this year i was priviledged to achieve 'Best player award' out of a 120 strong band and was also the principal cornet player of the band. This has felt like a achievement for me :)

Other interests and activities
Is it really bad that I can't think of any?  I'll get back to you on that! :)
