The Queen's University Symphony Orchestra (QUSO) was formed in 2007 by a small group of students and has excelled ever since, consisting of around 60 students from various subject areas throughout the University. Although we are run by a student committee, the orchestra gains financial and administrative assistance from the School of Creative Arts and is recognised as one of the school's main performance ensembles. QUSO is conducted by students from the University who are selected by orchestral vote at the end of each academic year.

The orchestra aims to perform challenging works to a high standard, with highlights of previous years including Tchaikovsky's Fourth and Fifth Symphonies and Sibelius's rarely performed First Symphony. Earlier this year we completed our trilogy of Tchaikovsky's 'Great' symphonies by performing the Pathetique alongside Gershwin's An American in Paris and the Overture to Wagner's Tannhäuser. Plans for the autumn semester include music from Borodin’s Prince Igor and Sibelius’s Third Symphony.

In June 2011 the orchestra went on tour for the first time, performing in Glasgow’s St. Andrew’s Cathedral and St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh. Given the success of this trip we hope to go away again next year!

The School of Creative Arts supports QUSO with rehearsal venues and equipment, promotional material, tickets, music hire, and invaluable help and advice from their staff, especially Ms Audrey Smyth, Ms Iris Mateer and .
